24 KARAT IS 99.99% GOLD
18 KARAT IS 75.00% GOLD
14 KARAT IS 58.50% GOLD
10 KARAT IS 41.70% GOLD

What do these percentages actually mean??

24 KARAT gold is 100% gold. It is not mixed with any other metals. You only get paid market price of gold for 24 KARAT gold because market price is determined based on solid gold. For all of the other KARATS listed above, they are gold mixed with other base metals to make up 100%. This means that you will get paid less than market price of gold for anything other than 24 KARAT. If you were to sell 10 KARAT gold it is actually more base metals than gold. If you look at the percentage for 10k gold, 41.70% is actually gold when melted, which means that the other 58.5% is other metals. So, if almost 60% of a 10k necklace is not gold, then you have to deduct market price by almost 60%. These same calculations work across all of the different KARATS of gold.
